The Dappy Shop Review 1

8 September 2010

1. What style of Nappy is the Dappy Shop Nappy?

This is a stretchy prefold Bamboo prefold with a Bummis Super Whisper Wrap Froggy on the top.

2. What was your first impression on receiving the nappy before washing or using?

I loved the froggy cover straight away but was unsure how to use the nappy inside. After washing they looked as beautiful as before.

3. Were the Instructions for washing and prepping the nappy straight forward?

Very basic washing and prepping for this nappy.

4. Did the nappy require washing before first use, and did you?

The nappy did require washing before use and yes I washed it before use.

5. Does the nappy come apart for easy washing and drying?

So easy to take apart for washing and drying.

6. How long did it take the Nappy to dry?

This nappy dries very fast. A few hours and it’s ready to use again.

7. Did you use the nappy the first time through the day or night?

Daytime use for this nappy so far.

8. When you used the nappy the first time, how absorbent was the nappy. Please give a rating out of 5, with 1 being not so absorbent and 5 being very absorbent.

This nappy is a steady 3 – 4 great for a day time nappy

9. Did bubs have any appearance of redness from the use of the nappy, eg. around the legs or waist?

No redness or irritation from this nappy. It’s very comfortable for baby

10. How do you feel about the Dappy Shop  nappy after using it the first time?

I love it. It’s handy and funky. After getting used to the stretchy snappi it’s even better.

Okay prefolds puzzle me…do you have to fold it a certain way?
I always assumed you just tri-folded it and put a cover on top (so it was kinda like an insert), but if you are using a snappi you must be doing more.
    Can you explain it?

Prefolds work really well. I found that the best way to fold a prefold is in the angel fold. Then use a snappi to fasten it. :) Prefolds are really good for newborns.

I love the froggy cover! Does it having laundry tabs on it? Some of the velcro nappies we have don’t have tabs on them so we are constantly getting snags in the wash!
Do you find the pre folds just as easy to use as the fitted nappies?
I’ve always been a bit scared to try them (not sure why!)
..also, is the pre fold bulky?

I just looked at their website to try and get a better understanding. They have folding instructions on there and like Danni said the angel wings fold seems to be the best. I too would like to know if they are bulky? And if you have found Lisa that you have to wash the cover each time because the prefold soaks through?

Oh sooooo cute!!! I too would like to know if the prefold is bulky? Is it very hard to do? which fold did you do? How long did you find it lasted? How well does it handle poo? Did it really get soaked through where you needed to wash teh cover everytime you used it or could you reuse it?

I am thinking of getting some prefolds for the twins when they are born as I hear they are great for drying time and they are a cheaper option. Not sure though as they seem so tricky! Is it really worth the fuss to save a few dollars? My other half says NO WAY is he going to be using them. He only wants fitted ones! So still not sure. Looking forward to knowing a little more about them :)

Prefolds have a thicker section in the typical wet zone so you fold it like you would fold a flat nappy making sure the thicker section is in the right spot. I think they’re great for bulking out a nappy collection, so if your other MCN’s are taking their time drying on a wet day you don’t have to resort to a disposable. The covers are just like the covers you use over fitted nappies. And don’t you think Snappi’s are great Lisa? So much better than nasty nappy pins!

Had a read about pre folds and now im getting what yuou meant Lisa, must be prety comfy. How is the absorbancy? Once the cover comes out the pre fold must be soaking wet!

  • rubina said:

What i like about the pre fold is that its alot like the terry folds we wore, almost the same concept, but a bit modernaised. The snappy is so cool, i have never used it before~

what kids of material is the Bummis Super Whisper Wrap Froggy made of Lisa and how long before you required change? I’m gussing regular change because bub will actually feel the wetness in prefolds and feel uncomfortable?

  • Meg said:

ahhh ok thanks Lauren for that info :) I think I get it now. Snappies are by far so much better than old style nappy pins. My little brother was part time in terry cloth nappies with the pins. They were awful! I was forever pricking myself! Better me than him. It’s what originally turned me off using cloth until I found out about MCNS.

I found the snappies were a little tricky but I only used them a couple of times and ended up selling the nappy i used it on as didn’t like that nappy. I think they would get easier tho with practice. How are you with it now Lisa?

After reading this review I am a bit more open to prefolds but still not sure as they aren’t that much cheaper than the fitted nappies I’ll be buying for the twins. hm… hard choice to make! Am going to need to buy sooooo many nappies – cries -

  • Bec said:

Meg I reckon they are definitely cheaper – The Dappy shop ones are $9 each, compared to say $18-$20 for a newborn fitted. And dry much quicker (so I’m told LOL). But if hubby isn’t going to use them probably not much point (although you will probably do the bulk of the nappy changing anyway).

I skipped the newborn stage with my 2 and started them both in cloth around 5-6 weeks so didn’t worry about the newborn size.

I use snappis for my Mandy Macs. I find them quite easy once you have had a bit of practice…

  • Bec said:

Oh and you can get prefolds in packs which makes them cheaper – I was looking at these before I had my babies – but decided not to go that way (as I said at the beginning they confused me LOL)

  • Meg said:

yeh not sure i want to use them – can just imagine the nightmare of trying to use them. I don’t need the extra drama! I am probly going to have to wait till baby bonus comes to buy nappies as we really can’t afford. so will have to be disposables for a little bit :( i hate the thought!

  • theresa said:

the froggy cover does look cute..but don’t think a would like using prefolds!

  • Lisa Abejja said:

Prefolds aren’t the easiest thing for me to use, I find it much easier to use a complete nappy or one with easy inserts. I can never get these to fit baby properly and sadly this nappy is a bit too small for my bub which makes it harder again. When that photo was taken it fit him well but he’s now 9kg and it’s a tight squeeze lol The absorbency is pretty good, it holds it’s own in your nappy stash and is a good nappy. The snappi certainly makes it easier than pins. The website has instructions on how to fold the prefold but still it’s not easy for me.

Sorry short reply guys. Slept too late last night and i’m feeling strange this morning cos of it. Was past midnight and I think I turned into a pumpkin hehe

  • Meghan said:

are you looking a bit orange Lisa? I’m feeling a bit pumpkinish today too :P LOL

Thanks for your honest review – I honestly don’t think I would like prefolds but am going to have a look at them when I get a chance just to see. I don’t think my other half would EVER use them tho haha

  • Bec said:

Meg – nah I never used them either…just too hard for me to get my head around LOL

  • Megan said:

I used terry flats for my first 2 then switched after 6months to mcns with our third-i love this idea be great on smaller bubs …Love the frogs cover its a PUL one yeah??

  • Jo G said:

I really find these easy to use. I used terry flats for my first 2 (15 and 12 yrs ago) so the folding/pins/snappies etc isnt all that strange to me. I use the ‘angel fold’ and secure with a snappy (which I love :) ) DH doesnt find them hard to use either, although his way is a little ‘rougher’ than mine… I make it neat and trim.
For night-time I add an extra booster and use a PUL cover and it lasts all night.
When using these during the day I change the cover with the nappy, but instead of washing the cover, I just hang it up to dry (doesn’t take very long) then use it with the next nappy, while the 2nd cover is drying. I use the same cover 2-3 times before washing…so 2 covers will last a day.

I used terry flats & the snappi on my two boys when they were bubs before switching of mcn’s. I really like the look of the Bummis Whisper Wrap – the frogs are adorable.
